Do I need a lawyers' appearance the day of the contact to buy in Greece?
In the past, it was compulsory for both seller and buyer to engage a lawyer to be present at the notary offfice the day of transfer of thereal estate.
Although this requirement no longer applies, it is advisable for the buyer (in some cases also for the seller) to engage a lawyer, in order to have the ownership title verified, and to further ensure the property is free from encumbrances and any third parties’ rights.
Please note that in 1995 started in various boroughs in Greece the unification of the Land Registries to the Hellenic Cadastre but 24 years later it has not been concluded yet.
